On war
The last week I’ve had a Band of Brothers for company. For you who haven’t seen the TV-series, it’s a Spielberg production. About an American Airbourne Division in Europe during World War II.
Usually I’m not that much into war movies. But this one has slowly gotten under my skin. After 6 episodes.
I keep wondering what war would do to me. I’m afraid that I would be scared, hiding in a ditch and eventually get my self killed spinning around in confusion and fear.
My great grandfather served in the first great war, forced into the German army as a member of the Danish minority in Germany. I have read his letters from the Eastern Front and although he kept reassuring his parents and my great grandmother that things were not so bad, reality shines through and it’s scary stuff.
My father and I have talked about turning the hundreds of letters into an online project when he retires someday.
Final remark: If one day we’re forced to fight I hope that I can be of any use.
