General Purpose Technology. On Lego

lego.gifLego bricks are generic building blocks and the combinations are Legio… Hahahaha.

I’ve found three basic approaches to The Bricks: Tech, Art and Porn — the three amigos that somehow always end up travelling together in various contexts.

Lego has always been attracting ingenious minds — check the search results of the slashdot lego search. Here you find the Rubik’s cube solver, the backup-tape changer, Escher paintings, mathematical models and other strange things. Go look and laugh.

And then we have Lego in contemporary art: The Lego Concentration Camp by Polish artist Zbigniew Libera. Background material here and here — causing a fuss, of course. Lego did not make the typical screaming PR-backfire mistake that other companies do from time to time. They just took it easy.

And now… *drum-roll* … You’ve been waiting for this one: SEX. Seeeex sex sex sex. We all do it. Yellow plastic people do it too!. Take a walk on google for more examples. This is the best one I’ve seen yet, but others may exist.

And the last link today not illustrating an approach but rather the origin: this flash thing shows you the inside of one of them darn Lego factories. [via kottke]

I’ve never been one of these lego wiz-kids myself, but I did my part in the assembly line, doing the classics: The Pole. The Tower. The Cube. The Wall. All quite complicated but good challenges for the bright mind. Oh, I almost forgot: The Lawn. That was one tricky bastard.

Right now I’m longing for a certain big cardboard box in the attic of my parents house…
